Sleeping under the Stars at Skyscape ✨
Waking up at 3am and seeing a shooting star go past is a memory I will never forget. Another highlight of our South Island road trip was an unforgettable night at Skyscape near Twizel. Skyscape is owned and operated by Bevan and Bridget Newlands on their 6000 acre family farm, Omahau Hill Station. They have created an experience that showcases the stunning MacKenzie Night Sky and rolling landscape – and as they are located inside the Aoraki MacKenzie International Dark Sky Reserve the night sky and stars really are spectacular!
The Skyscape SkyBeds are unique, mostly glass buildings that are nestled into the native scrub. They are very private as each of the SkyBed buildings is located out of view of the others and in secluded locations. The beds have been lowered which gives you the feeling of lying on the ground while looking up at the stars or the beautiful morning sunrise. The way the SkyBeds are positioned makes you feel at one with nature and it is the perfect place to escape the craziness of every day modern life.
Skyscape is completely off the grid and the property uses solar power and gas (and there is a back up generator for cloudy days). Continental breakfast is included in the nightly rate and each Skyscape SkyBed has a small kitchenette. There is the option of an evening dinner platter with local produce - ours included smoked salmon, cheese, salami, vegetable sticks, cherries, tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, pickles, bread, crackers and chutneys. It was a delicious assortment and as the location is quite secluded I highly recommend ordering this so you can stay in and make the most of the amazing experience.
If you love a good bath then the Skyscape bath certainly won’t disappoint. It is an outdoor 2m long stainless-steel cedar bathtub that you fill with heated water from a nearby spring. It really is the perfect place to sit back and relax.
Modern life can be crazy and going somewhere that allows you to switch off and experience nature in such a comfortable way really is priceless. Staying at Skyscape was an amazing experience and definitely something that should be added to the bucket list.
