Lakestone Lodge -Luxury on the Shores of Lake Pukaki
On our South Island Road trip one of the places we stayed was Lakestone Lodge. This eco-friendly lodge is located on the southern shores of Lake Pukaki with stunning views across the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. It is a great place to base yourself if you are planning on exploring the Aoraki/Mount Cook National park and also the perfect location for those who love to stargaze as it is situated in the middle of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – New Zealand’s only Dark Sky Reserve.
Lakestone Lodge is an intimate lodge with a total of only 6 rooms. The rooms are modern, contemporary, and extremely comfortable. Each of the rooms has amazing views across the lake to Mount Cook and a private courtyard to sit out and relax (on a clear night the views of the stars are breathtaking, and this is the perfect place to enjoy them from). My favourite part of the room is the stunning bathroom which has a free-standing bath and huge window again looking out across to the Southern Alps. The views really are amazing and once we arrived, I didn’t want to leave.
Breakfast is included in the nightly rate and meals can either be served in the lounge area or out on the terrace if the weather is good. There is also the option of adding on dinner and I highly recommend doing this. It a superb fine dining experience with stunning views and exceptional service. The dinner menu changes daily depending on what is seasonally available and they also cater well to special dietary requirements.
One of the other things that I loved about Lakestone Lodge (other than the stunning views, gourmet food and and amazing service) is that it is located right on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. There are complimentary mountain bikes that you can use at the lodge or they also have E bikes that can be hired (a charge applies for these). We went out and explored part of the trail on our first evening and it was one of the highlights of our trip.
Our stay at Lakestone Lodge was a wonderful experience and something that I highly recommend. The staff at the lodge were warm, welcoming and made us feel at home. We we will definitely be back.
